For all the celeb spotting, frock watching and award winning goings on at Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, there was only one movie icon on the red carpet that caught our attention: Uggie, canine star of this year’s biggest winner, The Artist.

La La Land’s pooch of the moment mingled with Hollywood royalty like a seasoned pro, dressed to the nines in an 18-carat gold and satin collar by luxury Swiss jewellery brand, Chopard. Uggie wore the bespoke, bone-shaped charm atop a slick black bowtie as he took to the stage alongside his co-stars in The Artist to collect their well-deserved Academy Award for Best Picture.

But whilst the VIP (Very Important Pooch) might now be well-accustomed to the flash bulbs and screaming fans, even winning the Palm Dog Award at last year’s 2011 Cannes Film Festival for his role in The Artist, Uggie’s is a true ‘wags to riches’ tale. Rejected by his previous owners for being too wild, Uggie was rescued from the pound by animal trainer Omar Von Muller, who led him on the path to stardom – sausages in tow – where he soon found success, appearing Water for Elephants alongside Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Sadly, Uggie has recently announced his retirement from film. We wonder what he will go on to do next – I dare say he could teach the lazy dogs a trick or two! They’re usually spotted getting comfy on a sofa or cosying into an armchairyup, the Hollywood Walk of Fame seems a long way off for them!
